Don't be fooled by Gmail's promise for confidential emails.
The new Gmail confidential mode for emails is neither secure nor private. At its best, it is a fun feature to help your recipient achieve inbox zero. At its worst, it is a privacy-intrusive feature that does not achieve true confidentiality. In fact, for sending a confidential and secure email, end-to-end encryption is a minimum requirement, and Gmail has long abandoned this approach.

Secure email for everybody: How to choose a secure email service.
When we started to develop Tutanota in 2011, our aim was always to establish the most secure email service possible. Now, we can confidently say that you can't have more secure emails than your Tutanota mailbox. This post explains why Tutanota is the most secure email provider, how we plan to stay ahead of quantum computers, and how you can make sure that no one can get access to your secure emails.

Secure your emails with U2F in Firefox.
The encrypted email service Tutanota focuses on security and privacy. One of the most important steps when securing your email account is to activate two-factor authentication to prevent email phishing attacks. We've released U2F support in 2017, but at that time were not able to support U2F in Firefox. Now, Firefox has started to support legacy U2F so we were able to add U2F support for Firefox. All Tutanota users can now secure their email account with a hardware token in Firefox.

Funding for research project on post-quantum cryptography acquired.
We are happy to announce that the Leibniz University Hanover and the secure email service Tutanota have jointly acquired EU funding for a research project in post-quantum cryptography. Cryptography experts estimate that quantum computers will be able to break widely used encryption algorithms in a few years. With the progress in developing quantum computers, it is time to future-proof Tutanota's encryption algorithms against potential attacks from quantum computers.

Encrypted messages are under attack: The crypto wars continue.
Encrypted messages are on the rise, particularly since WhatsApp and iMessage encrypt messages by default - similar to Tutanota's encrypted emails. But authorities all over the world keep pushing for encryption backdoors, ignoring the fact that this would substantially harm everybody's security. Now, the conservative Politician Horst Seehofer (CSU) wants to force WhatsApp, Threema and Apple to implement backdoors. The crypto wars continue, and we have to keep fighting for our right to privacy and for secure emails and messages.
