Tutanota is blocked in Egypt. Here's what you can do.

Tutanota users in Egypt report that they can't access Tutanota without using a VPN or the Tor browser.

Users in Egypt report that they can no longer access Tutanota due to a blocking of our service. We can't know whether this is being done by a state actor, but it's possible. Tutanota encrypts emails automatically so that no one can scan your emails. Surveillance - on which many oppressive systems rely heavily - is not possible when activists are using Tutanota. Despite this block, we will keep fighting for your right to privacy.

Censorship and Freedom of Speech

Censorship online is often used to stop freedom of speech. In many democracies free speech is protected by the constitution. This is the case in Germany and in the USA, for example. In these countries, it is very difficult - if not impossible - for state actors to limit access to information or communication tools online.

In other countries, for example in China, Russia and Egypt, it is common that state actors stop or throttle access to unwanted information or communication tools. Currently, this seems to be the case in Egypt where Tutanota is not accessible throughout the country.

Access Tutanota via a VPN or Tor browser

Whenever a site is blocked in your country or by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), you can access this site with the help of the Tor browser or via a VPN.

The Tor browser as well as a virtual private network (VPN) help you to bypass the local blockage of certain websites so that you can access them as usual.

Tor onion service is planned

At Tutanota, we believe security and privacy belong together. That's why we plan to publish a Tor onion service, which is already on our roadmap.

Only when people can communicate securely and anonymously online - without being spied on by their email provider or any other third party - a truly free communication can be achieved. We will keep fighting for your right to privacy and freedom of speech.
