Committed to Open Source - Tutanota App Will Be Coming to F-Droid

2018-02-08
Tutanota is the secure mail service that focuses on security and privacy. From its early days, Tutanota has been published as open source, licensed under GPLv3. Only with open source software third parties can verify that we remain true to our goal: Protecting the privacy of our users by offering the most secure email service. Now we plan to release the Tutanota app on F-Droid.

One of our aims with Tutanota is to offer a secure alternative to mainstream mail services like Gmail and Yahoo that spy on their users. Leaving Google behind is not easy, but the effort is worth it: You will regain control over your data. When you use services like Tutanota's fully encrypted mailbox, you own your data - no one else can access it.

To fully leave Google behind, we as the Tutanota developers have yet to do our share: Right now the Android app relies on Google's GCM for push notifications. That's why it is so important for us to publish the Tutanota app on F-Droid.

Updating our open source apps to fully get rid of Google

Our Android and iOS apps have been published as open source from the start. The current Tutanota app is built on Cordova, which in the past made it impossible for us to publish it on F-Droid because the F-Droid servers could not build the app.

Recently we have published our new mail client with lots of enhancements in public beta. The new client is much faster, comes with a great design, enables search on encrypted data, and it is not based on Cordova anymore. This finally enables us to publish the upcoming Tutanota app on F-Droid!

The new apps will support all new functions that the new mail client already incorporates. It will be a huge improvement, for instance, to search for mails within the Tutanota app. We are very excited about this upcoming release, not only because of the new features, but most of all because the new Android app will finally come without any ties to Google services.

This makes Tutanota a great email alternative to Gmail, Yahoo, GMX, Outlook, Fastmail, Posteo, Hushmail, Startmail, Mailbox.org and Protonmail.

Take a look at the detailed comparison: Protonmail vs Tutanota.

General make over brings huge improvements

We hope that you are as excited about this upcoming release as we are. We are in the process of giving the Tutanota apps the biggest update since we first published them three years ago. Once they are ready, they will come with

  • improved speed & design
  • auto sync
  • full-text search feature
  • and much more.

Review our code on GitHub

Tutanota's code is published on Github. We invite you to review the code, to build Tutanota locally, or to add issues that you have encountered when using the new beta client so that we can fix any bug quickly.

Tutanota is a real community project. The feedback and support we receive from all our users around the world is simply amazing.
